Laundry Detergent Pod Safety: The Number One Poison Risk for Toddlers

America’s Poison Centers logged nearly 2.1 million human poison exposures in 2024. A meaningful share of those calls involve a toddler and a product that looked interesting enough to grab.

Laundry detergent pods are near the top of that list. In 2024, household cleaning substances topped the list of substances kids under 6 got into, accounting for roughly 1 in 10 (10.1%) of all pediatric poison center cases, according to America’s Poison Centers. Pods are a significant driver of that number, and the reason comes down to a combination of chemistry and toddler psychology that makes them uniquely dangerous in a way that liquid detergent simply is not.

Why Pods Are Different

A standard laundry pod packs a concentrated dose of surfactants, enzymes, polymers, and pH adjusters into a single dissolvable film. That film is designed to dissolve fast, which is exactly what makes it dangerous when a child puts one in their mouth. The liquid inside is not diluted the way it is when you pour liquid detergent into a wash cycle. It is full-strength, and it hits mucous membranes immediately.

The result can include chemical burns to the mouth, throat, and esophagus within minutes. Respiratory distress, vomiting, altered mental status, and loss of consciousness have all been reported following pod ingestion. Even a small amount absorbed through mucous membranes can cause serious harm. This is not a "call us if symptoms develop" situation. Any ingestion is a medical emergency.

Powder and liquid detergents are not harmless, but they require a child to ingest a larger volume to reach the same level of harm. A pod eliminates that buffer. One squeeze, one bite, and the full dose is in play.

The Color Problem

My younger daughter once made a beeline for a bowl of colorful bath fizz tablets I’d left on the bathroom counter. She was 18 months old and had them in her fist before I turned around. I thought about that moment a lot when I started researching pods, because the hazard dynamic is identical.

Pods are typically bright blue, green, orange, or multicolored. They are small enough for a toddler to grip comfortably. They have a slightly squishy texture that is satisfying to squeeze. To a child under 5, nothing about a pod signals "not food." Toddlers are in a developmental stage where everything goes in the mouth as a means of exploration, and the visual profile of a pod is closer to a gummy candy than to a bottle of bleach.

This is not a design flaw manufacturers overlooked. It is a persistent tension between product marketing (bright colors signal clean, fresh, effective) and child safety. Some pods now use thicker films or protective outer casings intended to reduce accidental breakage. Those features may reduce the chance a pod ruptures in a child’s hand, but they do not eliminate the risk if a child bites down or manages to pierce the film. No pod design is safe for a child to access. Storage is the only reliable intervention.

Where Pods End Up (and Shouldn’t)

In my experience testing cabinet locks and storage solutions over the past three years, the most common mistake I see isn’t a missing lock. It’s a pod left on top of the washing machine, or sitting in the laundry basket, or balanced on the edge of the sink. Parents lock the cabinet and then set the pod on the counter while they sort laundry. The cabinet lock becomes irrelevant.

Many poisonings occur when a child accesses a product left in an accessible location for seconds. Not minutes. Seconds. The time it takes to answer the door, grab your phone, or switch the laundry from the washer to the dryer is enough.

The rule has to be simple and absolute: pods go directly from the locked storage location to the machine, with no stops in between. If you pull one out and get interrupted, it goes back in the locked cabinet before you deal with the interruption. That habit is harder to build than installing a lock, but it matters more.

Storage That Works

Pods must be stored in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf that is out of reach and out of sight. "Out of reach" means accounting for climbing. A determined 3-year-old with a step stool and a kitchen chair can reach most countertops and lower shelves. "Out of sight" matters because toddlers are less likely to seek something they haven’t seen.

Keep pods in their original container with the lid fully closed. Transferring pods to a decorative jar, a zip-lock bag, or any unlabeled container creates two problems. First, it removes the child-resistant closure the original packaging provides. Second, if a poisoning does occur, emergency responders need to identify the substance quickly. An unlabeled container slows that process.

The under-sink cabinet is the most common storage location for cleaning products, and it is also one of the most accessible to crawling and climbing toddlers. If that is where your pods live, it needs a working cabinet lock, not a magnetic closure that requires the right tool to open. Dishwasher pods carry the same risks as laundry pods and should be stored with the same level of security. They are often kept in lower cabinets and are just as concentrated.

Each year, an estimated 60,000 or more children under five are treated in U.S. emergency departments for unintentional poisoning, according to CPSC data. More than 99% of poison exposures in children under 6 in 2024 were accidental, according to America’s Poison Centers. Locked storage addresses the single most common pathway: a child who found something they weren’t supposed to reach.

What to Do If a Child Is Exposed

Call Poison Control immediately: 1-800-222-1222. This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it is free. Call before you decide whether the exposure seems minor. Call before you do anything else. The specialists on that line will tell you what to do next based on the specific product, the amount involved, and your child’s age and weight.

Do not induce vomiting. With chemical burns, vomiting forces the caustic material back through already-damaged tissue and can worsen the injury. Do not give activated charcoal unless a poison specialist tells you to. Both of these are well-intentioned responses that can cause additional harm.

If the pod liquid contacted skin, remove any contaminated clothing and rinse the skin with water for 15–20 minutes. If it contacted eyes, rinse with water or saline for at least 15 minutes, then contact Poison Control. Eye exposure to concentrated surfactants can cause serious damage and should be evaluated even if the initial rinse provides relief.

If your child is unconscious, having a seizure, or having difficulty breathing, call 911 first, then Poison Control.

Pods Away From Home

This is the part of pod safety that most guides skip. A significant number of poisoning incidents happen in homes other than the child’s primary residence, particularly at grandparents’ homes or in childcare settings. Older adults may not have updated their storage habits since their own children were young, and the risk profile of pods is relatively recent.

Before your child visits any home where they will spend time without you, ask specifically where cleaning products are stored. Not "are they put away" but "where exactly, and is that location locked or out of reach for a climbing toddler?" This is not an awkward conversation. It is the same conversation you’d have about pool gates or firearms. The stakes are comparable.

Childcare providers should have written policies about chemical storage. If yours doesn’t, ask.

Teaching Older Children

My older daughter was 4 when I started explaining to her that cleaning products are not toys and are never to be touched without an adult. She understood more than I expected. Children ages 4 and up can grasp the concept that some things look interesting but are dangerous, especially if you explain it plainly rather than just saying "no."
