First Days
Age Range: 0-6 Months
Even before your baby starts crawling or taking their first steps, these early months come with plenty of curiosity—and a few hidden hazards. Newborns quickly begin to roll, grab nearby objects, and take in their surroundings faster than many parents expect.
At this stage, babyproofing is about setting up a calm, organized, and safe environment. Prioritize secure sleep areas, reduce fall risks, and remove potential dangers that could lead to choking or breathing issues.
Getting a head start makes a big difference. Making small adjustments now is far simpler than trying to catch up once your baby is on the move.
- The safer the sleep the better
To help protect against SIDS, always lay your newborn on their back in a firm, flat sleep space. A bare crib or bassinet—free of loose bedding, pillows, and toys—is the safest choice. - Make sure your furniture stays put!
Long before your baby is crawling, they may begin rolling and grabbing onto furniture. Anchoring bookshelves, dressers, and televisions to the wall helps reduce the risk of accidents. - Out of sight out of mind.
Because babies learn through their mouths, it’s important to keep small objects—such as coins, batteries, and paper clips—away from their reach to prevent choking.

The Climber
Age Range: 9-12 Months
This is the stage when your baby starts going upright—pulling up on furniture, cruising along edges, and possibly attempting those first unsteady steps.
With increased height and confidence comes greater access. Items that were once out of reach are suddenly within grabbing distance, and your baby’s world expands in new directions.
- Make sure its secure
Little ones are starting to pull up, cruise, and starting to climb. Nothing is off limits dressers, bookshelves, and even TVs! Make sure all your climber equipment (your furniture) is anchored to prevent tip-overs, which are a leading cause of serious injury. - Look mom no hands!
Your baby is no longer limited to floor-level obstacles. As they begin cruising and walking, table edges, counters, and hard furniture corners are now right at head height. Install corner protectors in any areas where your baby is moving or practicing those early steps. - On top of the world!
Move or remove chairs and furniture that can be used as stepping tools to reach countertops, windowsills, or shelves. At this age, kids are incredibly determined—and far more resourceful than you might expect.

The Crawler
Age Range: 6-9 Months
During this phase, many babies start rolling, scooting, and crawling, reaching for anything they can touch or taste. This is the transition from staying put to moving with purpose, and their curiosity grows just as quickly as their mobility.
Babyproofing now goes beyond setting up safe areas. The focus shifts to preventing access to potential hazards. Start viewing your home from their perspective—anything within reach at floor level or slightly above becomes an opportunity to explore.
- Lock it down!
Once your little one starts crawling, stairs, and certain rooms become high-risk areas. Install safety gates to keep them away from any accidents. - Hands off!
At this stage, babies are eager to open, pull, and explore anything they can reach. Store cleaning products, sharp tools, and small items that could pose a choking risk up high and completely out of reach. - Bump Defender
As babies begin pulling themselves up, they’re suddenly face-to-face with sharp edges around the home. Adding corner guards to coffee tables, credenzas, and even the first stair step can help prevent painful bumps and bruises.

The Toddler
Age Range: 12-18 Months
Your baby is now a toddler—and their environment feels like a full-speed track. Walking quickly turns into running, reaching becomes climbing, and nearly everything looks like an invitation.
At this stage, safety is less about soft landings and more about controlling movement and access. Secure items that could tip or fall, lock what shouldn’t be opened, and use gates or barriers to restrict entry to areas that require close supervision.
- Multi-level locks
As toddlers learn to bend, stretch, and climb, safety measures need to adjust. Locks placed only on lower cabinets may no longer be enough. Secure drawers and cabinets at multiple heights, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, using strap locks or magnetic locks to help keep hazardous items out of reach. - Shut the door baby...
Many toddlers quickly figure out how to open doors—especially those with lever-style handles. Installing door latches or handle covers can help prevent unsupervised access to bathrooms, closets, and outdoor spaces. - Call in the reinforcements
At this age, some toddlers begin testing and climbing baby gates. Make sure your gates are tall enough and securely installed.
